National e-bulletin – 17 August 2015

Local Pension Boards

Part of the government’s objective to provide better governance for public sector pension schemes is to introduce Local Pension Boards (LPB), whose job it will be:

  • to secure compliance with the Regulations and any other legislation relating to the governance and administration of the Scheme, and requirements imposed in relation to the FPS by the Pensions Regulator; and
  • to ensure the effective and efficient governance and administration of the FPS

These boards will be made up of a minimum of four (there is no maximum) persons equally divided to represent the Fire & Rescue Authority (FRA) employers and employees. These voluntary positions are likely to be taken up by elected members, trade union representatives, serving firefighters and retired operational staff.

The RFU has been invited to take up a number of these positions across the country, if you would be interested in a position on a LPB please contact the RFU via our website.

Firefighters Attitude towards Community Safety

We have been contacted by Anthony Prosser of Nottingham Trent University, who is undertaking a survey that is designed to find out firefighter attitudes towards Community Fire Safety (CFS) and Home Fire Safety Checks (HFSC) in particular. The university would welcome the contribution from RDS staff who, in the majority of Fire Services, undertake this vital role.

The RFU would encourage our members to partake in the survey to ensure the views of RDS staff are taken into consideration. This would ensure that the results of the survey are credible and that any potential outcomes from the resulting piece of work are robust. Following recent feedback from RDS staff in the build up to the survey going live, the form has been amended to better accommodate responses from RDS staff.

We will provide our members with the final report when the findings of the survey are published.
