Local government finance policy statement
The FRSA has welcomed the government’s announcement of a multi-year Local Government Finance Settlement, which provides much-needed certainty for fire and rescue services.
The introduction of a real-terms funding floor for standalone fire and rescue authorities is a significant step forward, ensuring that these vital services can continue to protect lives and property without the uncertainty of annual settlements.
The longer-term approach allows fire and rescue authorities to plan strategically, invest in prevention and modernise services to meet the evolving risks faced by our communities. It also reflects recognition of the unique role fire and rescue services play in public safety and resilience, and the challenges they face in managing budgets under previous fragmented funding systems.
FRSA Chief Executive, Tristan Ashby, said:
“We have long argued for greater certainty in funding the fire and rescue service, and the government’s commitment to multi-year funding is a game-changer. It provides the stability needed to plan and invest in training and equipment and enables services to focus on prevention as well as emergency response.
Tristan Ashby went on to say:
We look forward to working with government on the forthcoming review of the fire funding formula to ensure resources continue to align with risk and need.”
The FRSA will continue to engage with government and sector partners to ensure that the implementation of these reforms delivers the best possible outcomes for our members and local communities.
