Welsh Governance of Services Report

07 June 2024

The Welsh Government published its report into the governance of Fire and Rescue Services this week, following weeks of gathering written and oral evidence through its Equality and Social Justice Committee.

The FRSA has provided oral and written evidence to the committee as part of its inquiry into the governance of Fire and Rescue Services, which was prompted by the findings of the Culture Review of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service by Fenella Morris KC.

Chief Executive Officer, Tristan Ashby said:

‘The committee report builds upon the findings of the Morris Review and the work undertaken by the South Wales Fire Commissioners. The Welsh Government deserves much credit for taking swift action to tackle the issues highlighted in the Morris Review and the pace at which it has moved. However, the road ahead will be long and rough, so we implore the government to maintain its focus on the work that needs to be done, firefighters across South Wales have been badly let down by some senior officers and elected members, it is vital that confidence is restored as quickly as possible to ensure that the organisation moves forward as one, free from fear, intimidation and discrimination and the FRSA will play its full part in this process. Which includes supporting the current senior leadership.’

The report: Sound the Alarm: The Governance of Fire and Rescue Services can be accessed via our FRSA App.
