Fire Minister has no confidence in

South Wales Fire Authority

Fire Minister for Wales, Hannah Blythyn AS/MS, has today written to the FRSA to confirm that she has conferred the functions of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority (SWFRA) to Commissioners.

Government officials will provide the FRSA with the statement which sets out the Minister’s reasons for reaching this conclusion in more detail as soon as the transcript becomes available in the next few days.

The Fire Minister is appointing Baroness Deborah Wilcox (formerly Leader of Newport City Council and of the WLGA), Kirsty Williams CBE (formerly Member of the Senedd), Vijith Randeniya (formerly Chief Fire Officer for the West Midlands Fire Service), and Carl Foulkes (formerly Chief Constable of North Wales Police) as Commissioners.

In a damning and frank letter, the Fire Minister stated that she has ‘…no confidence that the Service has the internal capacity or capability needed to oversee its own recovery, or for the FRA to show strategic leadership and to hold senior management to account’.

The Minister has offered to meet with the FRSA to discuss the matter further and will discuss the findings of the SWFRS Culture Report and its implications for the whole Fire and Rescue in Wales at the next FRS Social Partnership Forum of which the FRSA is a member.
