National Update
Campaign for Medal Recognition for Injured UK Firefighters
17 July 2024
Dear Members
There is currently a campaign to seek medal recognition for ALL emergency service workers who are severely injured and medically retired from the service.
Those unfortunately affected are deprived, through no fault of their own and only due to the injury, of receiving the long service and good conduct medal.
As no other medal exists, many leave the service without any form of recognition of their health, job sacrifice or even service.
In March of this year, the posthumous Elizabeth Emblem was finally approved recognising the ultimate sacrifice of those who lost their lives carrying out their duty. However, once again the severely injured were overlooked and forgotten. Here is a police example given by Tom Curry, a former police officer who spearheads the campaign, BUT there are equally as harrowing cases of far too many Firefighters in the same overlooked situation:
“How can it be right to recognise those killed but not those who survived but instead sustained a life-changing injury? For example, in 1983 a bomb exploded outside Harrod’s and sadly three police officers were killed and 14 injured. The next of kin of the three who died are now eligible for the Elizabeth Emblem BUT there is still nothing for the injured. (One of those who received life-changing injuries and forfeited her job is backing the campaign).
This is a long-standing national scandal and needs correcting ASAP.”
Veteran MP for Herne Bay and Sandwich and Deputy Speaker of The House of Commons, Sir Roger Gale is championing the campaign proposal. It has reached the Cabinet Office with the support and help of the outgoing Police & Fire Minister, Chris Philp.
The campaign has received cross- party support. Those who have also declared their support are, the Police Federation for England and Wales, the Police Federation for Northern Ireland. Unison for Ambulance.
Mr Curry has stated that thus far, only the FRSA from the fire service sector has declared its full support.
Sir Roger Gale MP remains actively engaged in championing the proposal.
There is a Facebook group for the duration of the campaign. ‘Campaign for Medal Recognition for Injured UK Firefighters’. Here is a link to join to track progress and add your support and I urge you to do so.
