Ben Brook becomes West Mids CFO
08 November 2024
Tristan Ashby, Chief Executive Officer of the Fire and Rescue Association, has reacted to the news that Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer Ben Brook is the successful candidate for the position of Chief Fire Officer in the West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service.
‘We congratulate Ben Brook on his appointment to this important role. This now gives Warwickshire County Council the opportunity to reconsider its reckless proposals to savage fie cover in the county’.
Tristan went on to say:
‘Morale in Warwickshire is currently at rock bottom, with professional firefighters facing redundancy after years of commitment to their local communities. Communities themselves will be stripped of fire cover, and those firefighters remaining will wait longer for support, especially in the more vulnerable rural areas of the county where response times will increase.
The fire and rescue service has not identified how these plans will be paid for in the longer term, as they are reliant upon drawing upon existing reserves. No-one has any faith in these proposals which will result in the incredible situation where Warwickshire taxpayers are paying more for less. It is an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ situation which needs to be put right as soon as possible.
We would be delighted to work with the new chief fire officer to provide workable plans, within existing budgets, which will ensure that effective fire cover remains in Warwickshire and the need for redundancies is removed.’

Note for Editors:
- Warwickshire County Council plans to reduce the potential of 23 fire appliances being available day and 21 at night, to just 14 during the day and 13 at night.
- Shipston, Gaydon and Fenny Compton stations will effectively close. They will have so-called ‘resilience teams’, which can be deployed in two hours.
- There will be no On-Call firefighters at Stratford, Fenny Compton, Shipston, Kenilworth, Bedworth, Coleshill and Atherstone. These firefighters now face redundancy.
